How to disable Internet Explorer’s End of Life Upgrade Notification?

On January 12, 2106 i.e. on next Tuesday, support for older versions of Internet Explorer will end. If you’re using either Internet explorer 8 or Internet Explorer 9 or Internet Explorer 10 on your computer, then you should upgrade IE version on  your system to IE 11,

If not, new End of Life upgrade notification for Internet Explorer feature through cumulative security update (KB3123303) (link) will be delivered by Microsoft to users targeting Internet Explorer 10, Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 8 versions.

As a result of this, users using IE 10 or IE9 or IE8 will be nagged or shown a notification from within their Internet Explorer to upgrade to IE11, if you don’t want that to happen on your computer, you can disable the notification in Internet Explorer in advance, here is how.

Disable Internet Explorer’s End of Life Upgrade Notification

For x86-based systems

  1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMainFeatureControl
  4. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
  5. Enter FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, and then press Enter to name the new key.
  6. Right-click FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  7. Enter iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new value.
  8. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  9. In the Value data box, enter 1, and then click OK.
  10. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart Internet Explorer to enable the new key.

x64-based systems

  1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMainFeatureControl
  3. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Enter FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, and then press Enter to name the new key.
  5. Right-click FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  6. Enter iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new value.
  7. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, enter 00000001, and then click OK.
  9. Locate the following subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMainFeatureControl
  10. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
  11. Enter FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, and then press Enter to name the new key.
  12. Right-click FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  13. Enter iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new value.
  14. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  15. In the Value data box, enter 00000001, and then click OK.
  16. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the browser to enable the new key.
