Chrome now Prompts users to change Cookie Settings if Sync Pauses due to them

Chromium team has decided to address the complaints about Sync being paused on every restart of browser, if the Sync pauses due to settings and users unaware of that, the browser now conveys that to the user via a message in the user menu.

Chrome You clear cookies when you quit chrome message in user menu

If you’ve configured Chrome to “Clear cookies and site data when you Quit ” browser or if you’ve mistakenly added accounts.google.com to Clear on Exit section in Cookie Settings, you’ll be signed out of all Google and other websites and Sync will be paused on every relaunch of Chrome because of that.

If your Chrome is in a paused synced state due to above Settings, Chrome adds “Paused” message to user avatar and displays this reason in user menu:

” You clear cookies in when you quit Chrome. To keep Syncing, change this settings”, clicking on Settings link takes to chrome://settings/content/cookies-page where you need to either turn off “clear cookies and Site data” setting or remove “accounts.google.com” from “Clear on exit” section.

Chrome Canary 77 has this change landed and associated flag “show Sync paused reason is the setup of Cookie Settings” seems to have enabled by default.

According to feature description, the flag when “enabled and the user in paused sync state because of Cookie settings set to clear cookies on exit, we show the user a message with the reason in the user menu”.
