Google is bringing ‘LiteVideo’ support to Chrome for Android (and Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS) to complement LiteMode to save more data for users by playing streaming videos in low resolution. In other words, “The LiteVideo optimization will help users save data on media streams by encouraging media players to use lower bitrates for LiteMode users.”

What is LiteVideo?
According to this thread: “LiteVideo is a data-saving optimization that simulates low bandwidth conditions by throttling media responses, to allow adaptive MSE Video players to lower resolution and consume less data.”
This is more or less, Chrome saying media players on websites to stream media at the lowest resolution possible when Lite Mode is turned on. The feature is targetted for Chrome 86.
Chrome to turn off LiteVideo optimization whenever the user reloads the host or navigates forward and back in the browser.
Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux and Chrome OS to support the feature also. In fact, flags are already available in Canary to enable and force LiveVideos.
Enable LiteVideo optimization in Chrome browser
- Launch Chrome browser
- Search for “Lite” and enable the following the flags and restart the browser
- “Enable LiteVideos”
- “Force LiteVideos Decision”

The former flag “enables the LiteVideo optimization to throttle media requests to reduce data usage”
The latter forces ” the LiteVideo decision to be allowed on every navigation”.
Chrome on Android has LiteMode, where on computers there is no Lite Mode available.
But when comes to Windows 10, a Metered Connection setting is available to save data.
We recently reported, Chrome Lite Mode to Sync with Android’s Battery Saver mode and soon Chrome will also respect Windows 10 Metered Connection and iOS’s Low Data mode.
