
Microsoft developed XPS (XML Paper specification) document as an alternate to Adobe’s PDF document format and introduced it with Windows Vista. Removing Microsoft XPS Document Writer
You can create XPS documents from Microsoft Office or from other text editing programs like notepad or WordPad, all you need to do is select print from the file menu and select Microsoft XPS Document Writer and click print button to create the XPS document.

Reinstalling XPS component in Windows 7 and 8
Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Add a Printer, click on Add a local printer > Use existing port > Next, select ‘Microsoft’ under printer manufacturer’s list, Microsoft Document XPS Writer will be shown on the right, click ‘Next’ button couple of times, MDXPSW will be added to the printers list.
