What is wmpnetwk.exe? how to disable it from Running in Task Manager

Wondering why wmpnetwk.exe process always appears running in Task Manager which program it relates to? can this be trusted process or virus? how to disable it if it consumes too much of system resources?.

Wmpnetwk.exe is related to Windows Media Player 10 in Windows 7, in fact, it’s a component of WMP 10 used to share media libraries. This process is from Microsoft, can be trusted and its not a virus! Before getting into details of disabling it, why its there running on your Computer and for what sake? Here is the explanation.

Location of wmpnetwk.exe process

Wmpnetwk.exe process is Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service “shares WMP libraries to other networked players and media devices using Universal plug and play”. wmpnetwk.exe process located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player in your Computer.

Disabling wmpnetwk.exe

If you don’t need sharing of WMP libraries for the devices on the network, you can disable this process, here is how.

1. For that, use Win +R command to bring up run dialog, type Services.msc and press enter.

2. Scroll down to Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, right-click on it and  Stop it. Now double click on this service, select and set its Startup type to disabled.

That’s it! Wmpnetwk.exe process won’t appears in Task Manager from now on.
