Mosaic Desktop Brings Windows 8 Metro UI to Windows 7 [Almost]

Last updated on September 9, 2011 By Venkat

We’ve covered several apps till now like Mosaic , Omnimo4 skin which brings Windows 8 metro UI to Windows 7 Mosaic Desktop formerly Mosaic freeware app now with much improved UI with a set of live widgets that pull content from web or from your PC and displayed on your screen. You need to customize Mosaic Desktop by adding some widgets that you use (like Gmail, Hotmail and more) and by pinning some apps and websites.

Mosaic Desktop

Using Mosaic Desktop

Download the program’s archive and extract its contents to a folder and run Mosaic Desktop executable. You need to wait, as the app does take while to load its UI in full screen with two widgets Clock and Mosaic Store.

You can click on arrow on right-side corner of the screen to bring up Sidebar which has options to pin apps and websites to the UI. You can install widgets from Mosaic Store. These widgets include: Control Panel .Weather, Gmail, Hotmail, Music, Pictures , Twitter,  Desktop, Me (user) and etc. overall 13 widgets to choose from the Store. User need to install each widget separately.

Mosaic Store

Friends function on the sidebar opens popup window with Facebook login page to use Mosaic. After logging in, script errors appear and much like other apps you need to allow Mosaic to access Facebook account information.

From app’s options/Settings you can

  • Show Windows taskbar in full screen mode.
  • Disable startup animation
  • Disable full screen mode
  • Disable widget animation.
  • You can auto start Mosaic with windows.

Mosaic Settings

It’s better for the user to enable the app to show taskbar in full screen mode, makes it easier to switch between the apps from the Windows taskbar. Turning off full screen mode not recommended as some HTML powered widgets visible only in full screen.

Mosaic still buggy, stops responding some times and there is no way to minimize the app results in user to run more than one instance of the program.  All- in- all  it’s a great experience for users who can’t wait for Windows 8.

This app requires .Net framework 4,0 to be installed in your Computer to work.
