Back in December 2012 Google began testing their experimental New Tab Page for few users which has default search provider logo, search box and four thumbnails for most visited pages underneath will be shown when New tab is opened by user, which currently Chrome dev. channel is showing as default for all users.

Reason for adding Search box to New Tab page?

What Google told reason for this change is despite people can search from Omnibox which is a combination of address bar and Search box is “we’ve found that many people still navigate to their search engine’s home page to initiate a search instead. The goal is to save people time by helping them search and navigate the web faster.”

Benefit with Google search included New Tab Page

With this new New Tab Page user entered search terms will be displayed in the Omnibox which avoids need of second search box on the results page.

What’s happening now is Chrome dev. channel by default showing search provider logo in New Tab Page.

Where the apps gone?

Old New Tab Page used to display Most Visited and Apps sections where you can able to view and access apps from Apps section. At present the new one doesn’t shows Apps section instead it shows shortcut to “Apps” icon at extreme right of bookmark bar which when clicked displays Apps section.

You can always able to show/hide bookmarks bar by pressing Ctrl+Shift+B shortcut. You can also able hide apps shortcut by right-clicking on bookmarks bar and deselecting “Show apps shortcut”.
