Today when I tried to launch Chrome from its shortcut on desktop got an error with the dialog “ Windows – Application Error The application was unable to start correctly (0*c0000135). Click OK to close the application” let us see how I fixed it finally.
I don’t know what’s wrong with Chrome where other apps are running fine, most threads on Chrome Support suggests these errors happens with infected systems. I thought it wouldn’t be the case with me, but for confirmation updated MBAM definitions and ran Quick Scan with it which detected threat for a surprise.
I do download apps from most trusted common software download sites like Majorgeeks, Softpedia and Download.com, Jesus!- MBAM result showed me that file downloaded from CNET download site added adware bundle to temp folder of user’s Appdata folder where Chrome directory resides and runs from.
Deleting it and restarting the Computer allowed MBAM to delete the file from Startup and Google Chrome opened and ran without any problems or errors. Lesson for me to not to download apps from CNET Download.com site.
MBAM always helps in removing threats. If you experience these errors not only related to Chrome but to other apps also, you should try to scan your system with MBAM or other anti-malware app.
