If you store important documents, files and portable apps you use in your USB Flash drive it’s better to backup them occasionally useful when the drive is lost or damaged, instead of copying all the files in the drive you can use freeware portable USB Image tool to backup entire USB drive as an image which you can burn to a disc or save to your hard drive for future use.
Using USB Image tool
Download the program zip file, extract its contents to a folder and run USB Image tool executable. Plugin your USB drive, USBIT shows device and volume information on the device tab. USBIT offers two mode of copy, device mode and volume mode. Device mode is selected by default.
Device mode copies the whole USB drive including the boot sector useful if you want to take backup of a bootable USB device, if that’s not the case go with Volume mode which processes the first volume on an USB flash device.
Now all you need to do is click on Backup button and specify the image file location to be saved, it may take more longer for the image to be saved (depends on the data it has to process). From the progress bar you can know the process of saving image, no confirmation message appears after saving which you can enable in the options.
The backup image will be saved in .img format. You can restore the same image to another USB drive if you want by clicking Restore button and selecting the img file. USB Image Tool works with flash drives, card readers and other USB devices like digicams, cellphones and mobile music players.
