Windows built-in Check Disk utility lets you check your hard drive for errors and allows to automatically fix these errors during the scan and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, Windows 8 does seems if it automatically checks the Drives for errors during the boot or startup (can’t confirm this) if you select Error checking for a drive, windows automatically suggests user whether to perform the scan or not depending on the system errors found on the drive.

If you want to perform the disk error checking in Windows 8, you’ve two options

Scan Drive: With this option, the scan and repairs will be done and the drive will be available for you to work, but you might need to take additional steps after the scan.

Scan and repair drive:  With this option, drive might be available during the scan but during the repair, drive will be unavailable as you might need to restart your Computer.
