bit.ly is the default URL shortner for Twitter (Update: Not now, Twitter uses its own t.co) and for other popular desktop twitter clients like Tweetdeck which allows users to shorten the length of the URL, share that link and also track the stats generated for that link also.
bit.ly can be accessed through the website, a bookmarklet and browser sidebar. For each bit.ly shortened link, user can know this information: who shared your links on twitter, locations of the users who accessed that link, and total number of clicks for that link.

Tracking bit.ly links
1. One way to know real time traffic, referrer data, location and all number of clicks for shortened links is by signing up for a bit.ly account, once bit.ly account is created, user can track stats for all bit.ly links.
2. Even if you don’t have a bit.ly account, you can still find the number of clicks and other stats for a bit.ly link
After a link has been shortened with bit.ly, user need to add + at the end of bit.ly link, for example running http://bit.ly/waFYR+ in the browser shows the stats for that shortened link.
